The Steps to Making Your Clay Caricature.

Step 1

The process starts when a color sketch is made based on photos of the subject. Photos showing hair, eye and skin color are needed. Requests for the type of pose are also required. This particular request was for the young lady to be in a Rocky-like boxing pose with her holding a specific sign.Any special reuests must accompany the photos. Photos may be sent by mail or as jpeg attachments in email.

Upon approval of the sketch, a retainer in the amount of half of the final estimate is due.

Step 2

Upon receipt of the retainer fee, the first step is to create a solid armature made of steel rods shaped together with a rock hard epxoy resin mounted on a wood base. The figure is then sculpted over top of the armature using polymer clays. It is hard baked in an oven.

Photographs of the progress at this stage are sent to the customer. Sometimes color is added overtop of the photograph for approval of the color scheme.

Upon approval of these photos, the remaining work continues.

Step 3

Now the model sculpting is complete and the painting process is started. Careful attention is paid to hair, eye and skin color. Any text elements are printed and adhesed to the model or painetd directly on it.

Photographs are emailed to the customers for the final approval. Front and back photographs as well as close-ups might be sent at this stage. Upon this final approval, the second half of the payment is now due.

Step 4

Upon receipt of the second half of the payment, the sculpture is carefully packed in plastic and wrapped in bubble wrapped. Then this box is put in a larger box with peanuts and shipped Priority United States Postal Service with Delivery Confirmation and insurance.
